The 2018 V8 Supercars season could be Jamie Whincup's last, with the six-time champion admitting he can't see himself driving in the category fulltime beyond that.
Whincup has three seasons left on his current contract with Triple Eight Race Engineering.
"I can't see myself going past that," the 32-year-old told v8supercars.com.au.
"I can't see myself being around past my use-by date."
The Holden star is keen to try his hand at other international motor racing categories, but won't do it while still competing in V8s.
"I would love at some stage before I am slow to have a crack at a few other things outside V8s," he said.
"So I don't want to be driving V8s too long. I want to give myself time to go and do some other cool stuff."
Whincup didn't specify what kind of racing his was interested in, and stressed that he hadn't yet made a final decision about staying in V8s beyond 2018.
But, like five-time MotoGP world champion Mick Doohan, he wants to get out at the "right time".
"He was competitive right to the end and he retired as a legend for the rest of his life," he said.
Whincup, who has won a record six V8 titles, finished this year's series fifth overall - behind first-time champion and Ford rival Mark Winterbottom.
He's aiming for a seventh crown in 2016, when Triple Eight expands to a three-car operation with Shane van Gisbergen joining Whincup and veteran Craig Lowndes.
