White Night lights up Melbourne again

Hundreds and thousands of people have turned out to enjoy the third White Night cultural event in the centre of Melbourne.

Melbourne's iconic buildings have been lit up in dazzling colours for the thousands of people who filled the city streets for the White Night event.

Organisers say about 500,000 people turned up for the third and final night of the cultural celebration with 80 free events spread across nine city locations from 7am to 7pm on Saturday.

The centrepiece of the event featured colourful images from Alice in Wonderland being projected onto Flinders Street Station.

Artistic director Andrew Walsh said taking this year's event to more precincts ensured spectator numbers were spread more evenly.

Police were generally pleased with crowd behaviour, making 19 arrests including one for weapons possession and others for drunken behaviour and theft.
