A feud between comedian Jimmy Fallon and President Donald Trump continues to escalate.

Fallon - host of NBC's The Tonight Show - used Monday's episode to address Trump's recent Twitter attacks, asking "why are you Tweeting at me?"

"Last night, the president of the United States went after me on Twitter, so Melania, if you're watching, I don't think your anti-bullying campaign is working," he said during the opening monologue.

"Shouldn't he have more important things to do? He's the president! What are you doing?" he said.

On Sunday, Trump slammed Fallon on Twitter, saying he was "whimpering" about a Tonight Show segment they did together in 2016.

The 2016 segment involved Fallon messing up Trump's famous hair. Fallon has since called the interview a mistake and that he wasn't trying to "normalise" Trump.

Trump claimed Fallon had, in fact, called him and mentioned "monster ratings".

"Be a man Jimmy," Trump tweeted.

Trump has also been attacking Fallon in public, calling him a "lost soul" during a South Carolina rally on the weekend.

"The guy screws up my hair, going back and forth. He was so disappointed to find out it was real. He couldn’t believe it."

"He apologises for humanising me. Poor guy, because now, he's going to lose all of us," Trump told the crowd.
