There are 19 places around Australia that have been World Heritage-listed by the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO.

There are 19 places around Australia that have been World Heritage-listed by the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO.

It's a well understood process which aims to protect important places, including some of the oldest rainforests on earth, marine parks of great biodiversity and beauty, and sites linked to Australia's Indigenous culture and its convict history.

But less well known is UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Every year UNESCO meets to consider cultural traditions and practices that it's equally important to preserve.
