Gareth Widdop believes St George Illawarra will head to England filled with confidence after a positive showing in last Saturday's 12-all draw in the Charity Shield against South Sydney.
The Dragons were much improved from 12 months ago when the Rabbitohs ran out 38-20 winners in the same fixture and Widdop said there were signs of definite improvement heading towards the new season.
"I thought it was a great performance and although there are certain things you look at I think we can take of lot confidence from the game," Widdop said.
"These games are all about everyone getting a solid crack and getting some minutes under their belts.
"It was good to see some of the young guys do so well against the reigning premiers as they are a great side."
England international Widdop will head to his homeland later this week where the Dragons will prepare for the inaugural World Club Series where they'll face Warrington.
Paul McGregor's side will be able to call on the services of fullback Josh Dugan who was cleared of a serious knee injury on Monday.
It was feared the former Canberra star could miss the start of the new season after he limped off after hurting his knee stretching for a low ball.
However, scans showed it was only a slight sprain and he'll take his place on the plane, Widdop saying it would be important to have a full strength side against one of the Super League powerhouses.
"It's more than a trial to us, it's a game we really want to win," Widdop said.
"They're a top team and have been for a number of years now especially leading into round one of the NRL season. It's a big game and I am really looking forward to it.
"No doubt the boys will be asking me where to go out and it will be a good opportunity for me to catch up with some family."
