The wife of an Australian coach who quit as a British cycling coach for alleged sexist and discriminatory language just 100 days before the Rio Olympics has taken to Twitter to call his accuser a liar.
Abbie Sutton's comments come despite a British Cycling tribunal upholding the complaint made against her husband Shane.
Shane Sutton resigned from British Cycling on April 27, 100 days prior to the Rio Olympics, over allegations of sexism levelled at him by track cyclist Jess Varnish.
There were further claims he called members of the Paralympic team "gimps" and "wobblies".
The Australian rejected the specific allegations, but quit his role as technical director to avoid any distraction leading up to the Rio Olympics.
After an investigation, British Cycling on Friday upheld the complaint and apologised to Varnish, prompting an angry reaction from Abbie Sutton on Twitter.
"Two words spring to mind when the word liar is used.. @JessVarnish #neverhappened #watchthisspace," Abbie Sutton wrote.
Varnish expressed relief and thanks at the investigation finding in her favour after in April alleging that Sutton told her to "just move on and go and have a baby".
"I'm relieved that the British Cycling board have acknowledged that the language used towards me was inappropriate and discriminatory and I would like to thank those involved and those that contributed to the investigation for their time and effort," Varnish said.
The verdict of the internal investigation concludes a tumultuous eight months for Varnish, who was dropped from Great Britain's elite squad by Sutton after failing to qualify for the Rio Olympics in the two-woman, two-lap team sprint.
