A Sydney woman has returned home to find her husband dead in their suburban backyard with upper body injuries, leaving locals shocked and police baffled.

The woman made the gruesome discovery at the couple's home on Burrinjuck place in Miranda at 7pm on Monday.

Police said that grandfather Paul Streeter, 54, had sustained obvious upper body injuries.

A neighbour, who didn't want to be named, expressed the sense of loss on the cul-de-sac.

"I gave (his wife) Kathy a hug and she started crying," she said.

"She told me she touched the body and it was cold."

Forensic police have spent Tuesday scouring the southern Sydney property which has been taped off.

Neighbours said Mr Streeter had three daughters and four grandchildren.

Local Gabrielle Murray said she'd never seen any trouble on the quiet street.

"I have never had any trouble in this street, there is never any noise there are just kids playing and riding their bikes," she said.

A post-mortem examination will be held on Tuesday, police said.

Police are not ruling out self harm or misadventure as a cause of death.
