Robert Xie's wife has told his trial he didn't leave home the night he is alleged to have murdered five members of her family.
The Crown alleges Xie was driven by intense bitterness and hatred when he crept into his brother-in-law's Sydney home in July 2009.
Once inside the North Epping residence, it is alleged he murdered Min "Norman" Lin, 45, Mr Lin's wife, Yun "Lily" Li Lin, 44, and their sons Henry, 12, and Terry, nine, with a hammer-like weapon.
He is also alleged to have killed Lily's sister, Yun Bin "Irene" Lin, 39.
Xie's wife Kathy Lin told his Supreme Court trial on Wednesday that the pair had gone to bed around 2am on July 18 after having dinner with her parents, Min Lin and his two sons that night.
"Do you know whether or not Robert left the house that night of 17 to 18 July?" crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC asked.
"No, he didn't leave home," she replied.
She said she was a light sleeper and would know if he got of bed to go to the toilet.
She said Robert had never mentioned to her about her parents favouring her brother Min over her.
The Crown alleges Xie was driven by intense bitterness when he carried out the attack on his brother-in-law's family.
They claim Xie killed the family in the order that represented the greatest threat of detection, first killing Mr Lin and his wife, then Irene and then the two boys.
The trial continues.
