Wigan coach Shaun Wane expressed his delight with a second-placed finish as his side maintained the only 100 per cent record in the Super 8s with a 13-6 win in rain-sodden Huddersfield.
Centre Oliver Gildart's try three minutes from the end finally ended the resistance of a battling Giants side and clinched a home semi-final for Wane's men.
"We did what we needed to do," Wane said. "We've struggled here in the past. They had nothing to play for but they played with spirit.
"Getting second was really important to me and we've nailed that.
"I just wanted to get the win, we've underperformed here in the past and I just wanted the two points to keep the momentum going."
Wane was forced to reshuffle his side after losing scrum-half Thomas Leuluai to a groin strain.
But Sam Tomkins switched effectively into the halves and Morgan Escare produced a match-winning performance at full-back, scoring the only try of the first half and kicking a second-half drop goal.
Huddersfield coach Simon Woolford described his team as "tired" after they collapsed towards the end of their previous game at Castleford.
