A single wild boar was the cause of a trio of car accidents in southwestern Germany, leaving four injured, two of them critically.
The animal was hit by a vehicle on a motorway near the town of Insheim early on Sunday, police said.
Shortly afterwards, another vehicle hit the stricken boar, causing damage to the side of the second car.
The third collision proved to be the most serious, when a 22-year-old driver spotted the carcass too late and swerved sharply to the right, causing the car to come off the Autobahn and roll down the embankment.
The driver and a 21-year-old front-seat passenger escaped with minor injuries but two people sitting in the back, aged 19 and 24, were critically injured and taken to hospital.
Fully grown male boars can weigh up to 250 kilograms.
While they belong to Germany's most common wild mammals, they are shy, nocturnal creatures and sightings are rare.
