Wilkie proposes 'fair' debt recovery bill

Andrew Wilkie has moved to legislate a commitment from the government to not try to recover Centrelink debts from people whose cases are being reviewed.

An independent MP is trying to stop the federal government from recovering debts from people whose cases are being reviewed by Centrelink.

Andrew Wilkie on Monday introduced a private members' bill to legislate against a commitment made by the human services minister following months of controversy around his department's automatic debt recovery system.

Mr Wilkie labelled it a "fiasco" and warned it was going to get worse this year, with the program to be extended to include people who receive the age pension and disability support pensions.
