Wilkinson salary debate a 'good thing'

Opposition employment spokesman Brendan O'Connor says Lisa Wilkinson's walkout from the Nine Network has triggered a much-needed debate over gender inequality.

The much-publicised departure of Lisa Wilkinson from the Nine Network has prompted a senior Labor figure to call on the workplace umpire to play a more proactive role in resolving gender inequality.

Opposition employment spokesman Brendan O'Connor was not surprised the Today host walked, telling the National Press Club on Wednesday the reaction it triggered was a "good thing".

Wilkinson reportedly left Nine after she failed to negotiate the same salary as her co-host Karl Stefanovic.

Mr O'Connor said he was less concerned about what Wilkinson and other high-flyers were paid, but the principle remained the same.

"If the only difference is the gender when the performance, the quality and the experience is indeed the same, the output is the same, then that is unfair," he said.

"In any modern economy and society that shouldn't be acceptable."
