Williams too strong in Auckland final

Third seeded American Venus Williams has won the ASB Classic, beating top seed Caroline Wozniacki in the final 2-6 6-3 6-3.

American third seed Venus Williams has come from a set down to win the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland.

The 34-year-old American, the beaten finalist last year, was too strong for top seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki, winning 2-6 6-3 6-3.

Wozniacki dominated the first set, her accuracy and recovery skills frustrating Williams, who made a number of unforced errors.

The second set looked like it could be heading the same way when Wozniacki broke Williams' serve in the first game but Williams then began her comeback.

With her first serve percentage improving and her ground strokes becoming more accurate, Williams broke Wozniacki twice to take the second set.

Williams made an early break in the third set and coped with the increasing wind better than Wozniacki.

The top seed saved three match points in the ninth game but Williams took the title when Wozniacki netted a shot from the baseline.

Earlier, top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci from Italy won the doubles title in straight sets 6-2 6-1 from fourth seeds Shuko Aoyama of Japan and Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic.
