Stefanos Tsitsipas has stunned Dominic Thiem with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory at the Barcelona Open to reach the semi-final stage.

The 19-year-old Greek world No. 63 eliminated the tournament's third seed in a surprising upset that demonstrated his credentials to be one of the next generation of tennis stars.

World No. 7 Thiem made a total of 21 unforced errors in a defeat which took little over 80 minutes and continued a string of high-profile eliminations.

Novak Djokovic has already been defeated and Kei Nishikori forced to retire after a wrist injury.

Tsitsipas will play the winner between quarter-finalists Grigor Dimitrov and Pablo Carreno, in action later on Friday.

Tournament favourite Rafael Nadal faces Martin Klizan and David Goffin plays Roberto Bautista Agut.
