Jason Winderlich has called time on his AFL career for a second time after an injury-plagued 2015 with Essendon.

The popular 30-year-old announced his retirement in August last year, only to reverse his decision at the end of the Bombers' season.

But after turning out just once in 2015 - a 38-point loss to Hawthorn in round 13 - Winderlich has told Essendon's website he believes it's time to go.

"I'm disappointed I could only manage to play one senior game this season," Winderlich said.

"It's been well documented my career has been interrupted by injury, and while this year didn't pan out the way I would have liked, I hang up the boots with no regrets.

Winderlich averaged less than 10 games a season in a career defined by injuries, with back, shin and soft-tissue problems preventing him taking the field in 2015.

Bombers chief executive Xaiver Campbell said a fit Winderlich was "one of the most exciting players to watch in the Essendon team".

"While injury robbed him of countless games, his resilience and determination to cant be questioned. He gave everything when he wore the Essendon jumper."

Winderlich, who was a first-round draft pick in 2002, finishes with 129 games and 83 goals in 13 seasons.
