The West Indies have suffered an injury blow with legspinner Devendra Bishoo falling heavily in practice at the MCG.

Bishoo, 30, was sent to hospital for scans on his left shoulder as the first session of the Boxing Day Test got underway at the MCG on Saturday.

The legspinner had been pressing his case for a return to the side but his tour is now in doubt with team officials fearing he may have damaged his rotator cuff.

The Windies made one change to the team that fell to a heavy defeat in the first Test in Hobart, with allrounder Carlos Brathwaite earning his Test debut in place of injured quick Shannon Gabriel.

Persistent rain saw play delayed by an hour at the MCG, with West Indies skipper Jason Holder winning the toss and sending Australia in.
