Melbourne Renegades have recruited another West Indian to take Chris Gayle's place, with spinner Sunil Narine joining the club for the upcoming Big Bash League season.

Narine has starred in the Indian Premier League, winning two titles with Kolkata and taking 85 wickets across five seasons.

The off-spinner, ranked ninth in the world for Twenty20 bowlers, has taken 40 T20 wickets for the West Indies at just over six runs per over.

He joins fellow Trinidadian Dwayne Bravo as the Renegades' overseas players after Gayle's controversial stint with the franchise ended last season.

Gayle departed after copping a $10,000 fine for a sideline interview where he asked television reporter Mel McLaughlin out for a drink.

The Renegades also boast Australian limited-overs opening batsman Aaron Finch and Test players Peter Nevill, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Matthew Wade.
