Windies skipper needs quicks to lift

West Indies skipper Jason Holder says his side's bowlers need to find a way to tie down Australia's batsmen in the third Test.

Jason Holder has put the heat on his bowlers, asking them to deliver more in West Indies' tour finale at the SCG.

Holder's men were embarrassing in Hobart, where they lost by an innings and 212 runs, but they showed a lot more fight in the Boxing Day Test.

It was the first time they batted more than 80 overs in both innings of a Test since 2012.

However, resolute half-centuries from Holder, Darren Bravo, Carlos Brathwaite and Denesh Ramdin counted for little because of Australia's first-innings total of 3(dec)-551.

The visitors have only claimed 10 wickets in the entire series.

In sharp contrast, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon have combined for 21 scalps.

"Our bowlers still need to be a lot more disciplined than we are at the moment," captain Holder said.

"The pitches have been very good for batting. We've been allowing them to score both sides of the wicket, and we haven't been able to contain them and control the game.

"We really need to tighten up."

The new-ball pairing of Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor has been one of the most disappointing aspects of both losses.

Roach famously terrorised Ricky Ponting at the WACA in 2009, while Taylor grabbed six wickets in their win over England earlier this year.

Yet both quicks have been well below their best on the current tour.

Taylor's opening spell on day three in Melbourne lasted three overs and cost 24 runs, while Holder didn't give Roach the new ball in Australia's second innings.

David Warner took 15 runs off Roach's opening over on Boxing Day, prompting Holder to drag him.

"I felt in this second innings it was my turn to pick up the ball. Kemar didn't start well in the first innings and I pretty much ended up still opening the bowling," Holder said.

"I just felt it was the best thing for the team at that time so I just took it upon myself to bowl the ball."

Bravo, who scored a ton in the first Test and fell 19 runs short of doing the same at the MCG, remains a source of inspiration for the visitors.

"I mentioned in the dressing room yesterday, Darren Bravo I think has been exceptional," Holder said.

Meanwhile, the allrounder cherished a verbal confrontation with David Warner on day three.

"Good banter, man. I really enjoyed that. They came at me so I went back at them," he said.
