Former independent MP Tony Windsor is being encouraged to have another tilt at federal politics and defeat deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce.

Liverpool Plains farmer Rosemary Nankivell has started a petition on lobby group GetUp's website, which 1300 people have signed so far, calling for Mr Windsor to run again in the seat of New England.

"Joyce might say he's standing for New England community's interests, but that's coming from the leader of a party that routinely accepts tens of thousands of dollars in contributions from the coal and gas industry," she said.
