Winners, losers after knifing another PM

Scott Morrison has made an extraordinary rise to prime minister, while conservatives are licking their wounds.

WINNERS

* SCOTT MORRISON

Set to become Australia's 30th prime minister after defeating Peter Dutton 45-40 in a partyroom vote. The treasurer rose to prominence as the tough face of the immigration portfolio. Morrison now faces an almighty fight to cling to power at the next election.

* JOSH FRYDENBERG

The energy minister's star has risen to deputy party leader with an "overwhelming" vote. He has become treasurer under Morrison, making the moderate Frydenberg an unlikely beneficiary of a conservative campaign to terminate Turnbull.

* BILL SHORTEN

As the Liberals tore themselves to shreds, Shorten became a short-priced favourite to lead Labor to victory at the next election. Having played his part in his party's own leadership crises, Shorten is now set to benefit from the Liberal party making the same mistakes.

LOSERS

* PETER DUTTON

All the agitating, destabilising and campaigning couldn't get Dutton the keys to The Lodge. Morrison has offered Dutton an olive branch to serve in his ministry but it's unclear if he'll take up the offer.

* JULIE BISHOP

After more than a decade as deputy leader, Bishop's tilt at the top job fell flat when she was bundled out in the first round of voting. It's expected she will retire from parliament at the next election but whether she continues as foreign minister in the meantime is up in the air.

* MALCOLM TURNBULL

His reign as prime minister is over and so is his political career. There were no tears from Turnbull but some anger directed at the "insurgents" who waged a campaign against him.

* TONY ABBOTT

Abbott will be happy to see the back of Turnbull, who deposed him as prime minister three years ago but sad his man Dutton got beaten. Under Dutton, Abbott was tipped to return to cabinet but now his future is uncertain.
