Ford's Mark Winterbottom has broken through for a first pole position in more than a year at the V8 Supercars round at the Australian Grand Prix.
Winterbottom narrowly beat home teammate Chaz Mostert with a 1:56.0517 lap to end 44 sessions without a pole position.
Despite the result coming at the non-championship meet alongside Formula One, the 2013 Bathurst champion didn't allow that to stop his joy.
"It's been a long time since we've had a pole position, so it's good to be back," Winterbottom said.
"It's fantastic, the team's done an incredible job to be one, two, and four."
Clipsal 500 winner James Courtney took his Holden Commodore to third place, with Ford's David Reynolds backing up strong practice speed to join him on the second row.
Winterbottom was the last man to take a Falcon to the top of the qualifying timing charts at Phillip Island in 2013.
The qualifying session sets the grid for the first of four V8 races during the Grand Prix, with subsequent races counting as qualifying for the following race.
Last year's pole sitter Michael Caruso was only able to complete a single lap as his Nissan was plagued by electrical issues.
Race one begins at 2:20pm on Friday, with a second race at 6:20pm.
