Winterstein wasn't alone on NRL return

North Queensland flyer Antonio Winterstein says he 'spoke' to his brother during the Cowboys comeback win over Melbourne.

When Melbourne took on North Queensland in Monday's NRL clash in Townsville, the Storm probably didn't realise their opponents had 14 players on the field.

But that's exactly how Antonio Winterstein felt as he made an emotional return just over a fortnight after his 19-year-old brother Francis tragically took his own life.

Winterstein says he called on his brother's spirit for support during the game, which ended in a thrilling golden-point win for the Cowboys.

"I spoke to him a lot during the game, which really helped me during the tough times," Winterstein said.

"I was fatigued there for a bit, asked for his help and I definitely wasn't out there by myself."

Winterstein's return came after sitting out two matches with the Cowboys granting him compassionate leave.

The 26-year-old, who scored two tries in the 18-17 win, said the support of the club and his teammates wouldn't be quickly forgotten.

"It's been amazing," he said. "You see a lot of true colours at times like this.

"The love and support the boys have shown me is something I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

"They're like brothers to me. They were there for me at the hard times and I just can't wait to repay their faith on the field."
