A woman has been charged with passing counterfeit money in NSW's greater Newcastle area.

Port Stephens Police began an investigation earlier this month after numerous businesses reported receiving counterfeit currency.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at Raymond Terrace on Friday afternoon and charged with utter counterfeit money knowing it to be counterfeit.

She was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on August 31.
