A woman has been charged over 40 deliberately-lit fires in Victoria's north.

Arson squad detectives arrested a 49-year-old Tatura woman after emergency crews were called to a grass fire in Tatura, near Shepparton, about 3.20am on Friday.

She was charged with 41 offences, including intentionally causing a bushfire, criminal damage caused by fire and other related offences.

Victoria Police acting chief commissioner Tim Cartwright said officers had been investigating 40 suspicious fires in the area over the past year.

He said anyone who saw someone lighting a fire, welding or using an angle grinder on total fire ban days should report them.

"If you see that activity, let us know, ring triple 0," he told reporters on Friday.

The woman is due to appear at the Shepparton Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.
