A woman is fighting for her life with critical burns following a house fire in Melbourne's north.

Firefighters dragged the woman to safety after they found her unconscious and not breathing inside the burning Thomastown home on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, aged in her late 60s, suffered facial and airway burns in the house about 3.45pm and was flown to The Alfred hospital, while a woman in her 50s, believed to be her sister, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

An MFB spokeswoman said the fire damaged seven of the eight rooms in the house.

Two dogs, two cats and a number of birds perished in the fire.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
