Woman dies in WA police custody

The police internal affairs unit will investigate after a young woman died in custody in a WA hospital.

A young woman being held in police custody has died in a hospital in northwestern Western Australia.

The 22-year-old told officers at the South Hedland station she was feeling unwell and was taken to the Hedland Health Campus early on Monday afternoon.

"Upon arrival at the hospital the woman's condition deteriorated and she passed away," police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner and the police internal affairs unit will also investigate.

Further information is being sought from WA police.
