A Tasmanian woman is fighting for her life after she was allegedly doused with petrol and was then set alight.

The 43-year-old was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital where she is in an induced coma with serious burns to her upper body and face, police say.

The woman's partner, a 45-year-old Austins Ferry man, has appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded to reappear in court on Monday.

The incident is believed to have taken place in the garage of the couple's Austins Ferry home.
