A 70-year-old woman has been injured after her car was hit by a hoon who'd been doing burnouts and was racing away from police.

NSW police say they were in Murwillumbah on Wednesday when they saw a car do a burnout.

When they approached it, the driver did another burnout before reversing towards two officers.

They say the runaway car then smashed into another car, which had a 70-year-old woman and 80-year-old man inside.

The woman was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured sternum.

Police say officers suffered minor injuries when the offender drove towards a second group of police and later when a scuffle broke out when he was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with a number of assault and traffic offences.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in court on Thursday.
