A woman who died after being hit by a car on a highway near Alice Springs may have been lying in the road.

The 36-year-old was struck on the Stuart Highway on Wednesday night and died at the scene.

"It appears the woman may have been lying on the road at the time of the incident," Watch Commander Darrell Kerr said.

The driver called for help, and police and emergency services attended but the woman couldn't be saved.

Police are calling for any witnesses who were travelling along the Stuart Highway between 7pm and 8pm who may have seen the victim.

A report will be prepared for the corner.
