A young female driver has been pulled over by a man pretending to be a police officer on the NSW mid north coast.

The 22-year-old woman was driving on the Pacific Highway just north of Coffs Harbour on Thursday night when she noticed a car behind her with a flashing red light on the dashboard.

After she pulled over, a man carrying a torch approached the woman's car and asked to see her driver's licence, police say.

When she realised the man's car had no number plates on the front, she drove away and reported the matter to police.
