An intruder has punched a woman in the face and upper body after breaking into her home in Sydney's west.

A 37-year-old woman has been woken by an intruder and punched in the face and upper body in her home in Sydney's west.

Police say the woman was in her Auburn apartment at about 9.50pm on Sunday when she was attacked by the offender who then fled the scene

She was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment to head injuries and facial lacerations.
