A 73-year-old man has been arrested in northern Hobart after a woman was shot in the head in a roadside shooting.

Police say the woman was shot in New Town at 3.15pm on Thursday and is in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Her companion, another woman, received injuries to her hand and arm.

The man was arrested at the scene and police have recovered the firearm used in the attack.

Police say the shooter and the two women knew each other, adding that the shooter's black Mercedes and the women's silver Peugeot had stopped on Risdon Road just before the incident. Police are appealing for witnesses.
