Women's crews lead Aussies at world rowing

Australia will send 10 crews to the world rowing championships in September in Florida with two women's crews among the medal favourites.

Australia's women will lead the medal hopes at the world rowing championships in late September in Florida.

The women's four - made up of Molly Goodman, Sarah Hawe, Katrina Werry and Lucy Stephan - won gold at both world cup regattas in which they competed in Lucerne, Switzerland and Poznan in Poland.

The women's lightweight quad scull, after also winning gold in Switzerland, will start among the favourites for that title in Sarasota-Bradenton from September 24-October 1.

With 10 crews named on Tuesday - four women's, five men's and one para - the men's line-up has been slightly tweaked after the world cup regattas.

Reserves Hamish Playfair and Simon Keenan have forced their way into the eight to replace Angus Widdicombe and Darcy Wruck.

Three-time para-rowing world champion sculler Erik Horrie, competing internationally for the first time since his Paralympic silver medal in 2016, will race over two kilometres at world championship level for the first time after a change to the event.

Australia finished second on the medal table in Lucerne, collecting two silvers and one bronze.

Many of Australia's most-experienced competitors are taking the year off after the Rio Olympic campaign, with just a handful included for these titles while gold medallist Kim Brennan has retired from elite level racing.
