Women's Tour of NZ gets international tick

Cycling's governing body raises the stakes for the Women's Tour of New Zealand by giving it international status.

The Women's Tour of New Zealand in February has been given a boost after being granted international status by cycling's governing body.

The Union Cycliste Internationale ruled the five-day tour in the Wairarapa region met the necessary criteria and will be the third event on the 2015 women's cycling calendar following races in Argentina and Qatar.

Race director Jorge Sandoval says the increased status of the tour meant it would attract top riders.

"This is also great news for New Zealand riders who will have the opportunity to race against the best in the world right here in New Zealand," he said.

He says the Wairarapa region will also benefit from international television coverage.

A field of up to 140 riders will be announced later this year for the five-stage tour from February 18-22.
