Woodland grabs second US PGA Tour title

Gary Woodland has won the Reno-Tahoe Open in Nevada, his second US PGA Tour victory.

Long-hitting American Gary Woodland has earned the second US PGA Tour title of his career, amassing seven points in the final round to win the Reno-Tahoe Open under the modified stableford system.

Woodland finished 72 holes at Montreux Golf and Country Club with 44 points, adding a second career title to his 2011 Transitions Championship crown.

"I felt like it was meant to be this week," said Woodland, who secured a spot in next week's PGA Championship with the victory.

Jonathan Byrd totaled a single-day record 18 points in the final round to vault into a tie for second place. He finished with 35 points, alongside Argentina's Andres Romero, who earned eight final-round points.

Stuart Appleby, struggling to retain his tour card, finished the best-placed Australian in a tie for 16th on 26 points.

The modified stableford scoring system awards eight points for double eagles, five for eagles, two for birdies, zero for pars and subtracts one point for bogeys and three points for double bogey or worse.

Brendan Steele tallied three points and ended in solo fourth with 33 points.

Woodland built up a seven-point lead through three rounds, but Byrd threatened that gap as played his first nine holes without a bogey, notching five birdies for 10 points. He gave a point back with a bogey at the 10th, rebounded with a birdie at the 11th, then earned five points with an eagle at the 13th.

A birdie at 14 pulled Byrd within two points of Woodland, but he didn't pick up any more points.

Woodland, meanwhile, gained two points with a birdie at the third.

After 10 pars he chipped in for birdie at 14. He added two more birdies and a bogey the rest of the way.
