Woods backs uncle Tiger to find form

Tiger Woods niece Cheyenne says she's surprised by her uncle's decision to take a break from golf but expects he'll comeback better for the time away.

Cheyenne Woods says she's hopeful uncle Tiger's decision to take a break from golf will get the former world No.1 back to his best.

Woods used his website to announce he's taking an indefinite break from the game and he won't return until his golf is to what he determines to be an acceptable standard for the US PGA Tour.

Woods shot a career-worst 82 to miss the cut in the recent Phoenix Open by 12 shots.

He was playing poorly at Torrey Pines last week when he withdrew after 11 holes because of tightness in his back.

Niece Cheyenne is on the Gold Coast defending her Ladies Masters title.

She found out about her uncle's decision after shooting an opening round even-par 73 on Thursday at Royal Pines.

"I'm sure he's taking whatever steps necessary to get back to where he needs to be," she said.

"Hopefully it won't be too long that he'll be out.

"I don't know if anybody really saw it coming or if he was thinking about it or not. I'm not sure.

"Hopefully he can take that time to get back to where he wants to be."
