Workers didn't lose jobs by text: ASC

Adelaide shipbuilder ASC has denied union claims that contract workers were laid off via text messages.

Adelaide defence shipbuilder ASC says no contract workers have sacked by text messages or emails.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says 26 contractors, who were employed through labour hire companies, were told late on Wednesday that they were out of a job via text messages and phone calls.

"ASC specifically requested the labour hire companies to notify the contractors verbally and we have been advised by those labour hire companies that no contractors were notified by text or email," the shipbuilder said in a statement on Thursday.

AMWU SA assistant secretary Colin Fenney said laying off workers over the phone was "disgusting".

"They should have been allowed some dignity by being told while still at work," he said in a statement.
