Australian swimming star Cate Campbell feels like a greyhound chasing a rabbit as she hunts down an elusive individual Olympic gold medal.

Campbell's Olympic dream was dashed at the 2012 Games in London when a bout of pancreatitis wrecked her 50m freestyle campaign and also forced her to pull out of the 100m event.

The 21-year-old bounced back to become 100m freestyle world champion last year, and she's shaping as the woman to beat at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Although Campbell won gold at the London Olympics as part of the Australian 4x100m freestyle team, she's desperate to taste individual success in Rio.

"I haven't achieved all that I want to achieve from swimming," Campbell said.

"There's always that little carrot dangling there - and that's an Olympic individual gold medal.

"I may not ever achieve it, but I'm going to give it a red-hot go.

"I'm still that greyhound chasing the rabbit. Hopefully, one day, I'll catch it.

"I'm already starting to feel old at the ripe old age of 21.

"But at the moment, I can't think of anything else in the world I'd rather be doing."

Campbell will be back in action this week at the Aquatic Super Series in Perth, where Australia's best will take on swimmers from Brazil, Japan, China and South Africa.

The event will be Australia's first under new coach Jacco Verhaeren, and it also shapes as an important stepping stone towards the Commonwealth Games trials in April.

Campbell's younger sister Bronte will also compete in Perth, where the pair will embrace their growing rivalry.

Bronte has been forced to play second fiddle for much of her career, but the 19-year-old hopes to turn the tables soon.

"I'd lie if I said I wasn't tired of getting beaten all of the time, but one day, maybe I'll get her," Bronte said with a laugh.

"We push each other in training all of the time.

"We also live together, so it's nice having a roomie that you know really well."
