World Cup final sets local cricket crowd records

Australia and New Zealand were anxiously awaiting the start of Sunday's cricket World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, one of the sport's spiritual homes.

The World Cup final has broken Australian cricket's attendance record.

Organisers announced late on Sunday during the Australia v New Zealand match that more than 91,112 fans were inside the MCG.

That was the previous single-day crowd record, set on day one of the 2013 Boxing Day Test.

The previous one-day international record crowd was 87,182, set when Pakistan beat England to win the 1992 World Cup final at the MCG.

The final crowd figure will be announced during the Australian innings.

New Zealand have collapsed for 183 in the cricket World Cup final against Australia at the MCG.

Grant Elliott top scored with 83 as the Kiwis fell inside 45 overs.

James Faulkner and Mitchell Johnson grabbed three wickets each.

Caped protester interupts preperations

For the second time, a caped crusader protesting for better refugee conditions has invaded the MCG ahead of today's cricket World Cup final.

He ran onto the pitch before the final between Australia and New Zealand, calling for the closure of offshore detention centres.

He was wearing a shirt bearing the slogan `I (Heart) Refugees' and a cape with the words `End Offshore Detention'.

The same man also ran onto the field at the Australia versus England match in February.
