Players from the 14 teams taking part in the Rugby League World Cup will raise funds for victims of the NSW bushfires in an initiative launched by NRL forward Clint Newton.
Newton, who is playing for the United States, has family and friends in the Blue Mountains area.
The teams in the 14th World Cup in Britain, France and Ireland have donated signed jerseys which will be auctioned off to support The Salvation Army, which has begun the task of rebuilding the lives of those who lost their homes.
The NRL is supporting the appeal and will host the auction, which runs for the length of the tournament, on its website.
Newton left Super League club Hull KR at the end of last season to rejoin Penrith and will play for Newcastle in 2014.
"After discussing it with my USA Tomahawks' teammates, we felt it was important to give back to the local communities back home.
"The response from the other nations and the NRL with regards to their willingness to help, however possible, is a credit to all involved.
"It shows how much these events have affected players and the rugby league fraternity because every team here has members who have strong ties to the Australian people who have been so deeply affected."
