The country’s highly talented footballers would often fall to painstaking defeats at the World Cup, when success appeared a certainty.
But in 2010 everything changed.
Spain’s golden generation finally fulfilled its potential and was crowned World Champion.
For a moment the country’s economic woes were forgotten as Spanish football fan Eduardo Perez remembers.
“I was on the floor like five minutes crying and my wife was asking me what are you doing? Why are you crying, you never cry like this for me. But it was a special day it was one of the best days of my life.”
This time Spain will be one of Australia’s opponents and the Socceroos have much to be concerned with.
World class talents like Andres Iniesta will lead the way, as La Furia Roja try to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to defend the world title.
They’ll need luck to get their way once more, but Spanish fans are still hopeful that after so many years of hurt, 2010 wasn’t a one off.
