World Cup warm-up win for Boomers

Australia's basketballers beat Ukraine 74-65 in a World Cup warm-up event in Nice that also includes France and the Philippines.

A remarkable final-quarter shooting performance from Ryan Broekhoff carried Australia to a 74-65 win over Ukraine in the four-nation men's basketball tournament in Nice on Friday.

Broekhoff contributed 15 points in the final quarter with 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc, part of a 22-13 run in favour of the Boomers.

After playing a limited role in the opening four games of the tour, Broekhoff said a meeting with coach Andrej Lemanis reinforced what he could contribute.

"Andrej went over with me what my role is in the team and gave me a bit of licence that when I get open shots he wants me to take them and shoot them with confidence," Broekhoff said.

"Tonight I was lucky enough that my teammates found me open, set me some great screens and I was able to knock them down.

"I was fortunate enough to get some good, open looks when I first came on and from there was able to go on a little run."

Aron Baynes finished with a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds), finding support from Brock Motum (11 points and five rebounds), Cameron Bairstow (eight points and seven rebounds) and Brad Newley (nine points, three rebounds and three assists).

Next up for the Boomers is a match-up with the Philippines on Saturday before rounding out the tournament against France on Sunday.
