The world's first wave-energy farm connected to a national electricity grid has been switched on in Western Australia.

The project by Perth-based Carnegie Wave Energy will provide renewable electricity for Australia's largest naval base on Garden Island.

The same system will also be able to desalinate water.

The federal government's Renewable Energy Agency provided about $13 million to the project.

The agency's Ivor Frischknecht explained to Santilla Chingaipe how it works.
