Five world leaders will tour Australian capital cities and three will address parliament as part of a program linked to the G20 summit.

British Prime Minister David Cameron will address a special sitting of parliament on November 14, the day before the summit opens in Brisbane.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will be formally welcomed to Canberra and address parliament on November 17, followed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 18.

It will be the first time an Indian leader has addressed the parliament.

Mr Xi's predecessor Hu Jintao addressed the chamber in 2003, and former British PM Tony Blair delivered a speech in 2006.

Two other leaders, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, will take part in formal and community events.

President Hollande's visit, which takes in Sydney and Canberra as well as the summit in Brisbane, will be the first by a French head of state.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who will host G20 leaders in Brisbane on the weekend of November 15-16, said it was an opportunity to showcase Australia and strengthen some of the nation's most important international ties.

Mr Cameron will visit Sydney before the summit.

Chancellor Merkel is due to address the Lowy Institute in Sydney on November 17.

President Xi, who has been to Australia on four previous occasions, will add Sydney and Hobart to his itinerary.

Mr Modi will also attend events in Melbourne and Sydney.
