World surfing tour on hold on Gold Coast

The men's and women's world surfing tour events on the Gold Coast are on hold until Friday due to poor wave conditions.

A second consecutive lay day has been called at the opening rounds of the World Surf League Championship Tour men's and women's events on the Gold Coast.

"There's a really strong northerly wind today, which is blowing directly into the beach, causing some horrible conditions and is forecast to stay here all day," said WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow.

"We're anticipating a change in conditions overnight, which should bring in some pretty good waves at Snapper so we'll be back tomorrow."

Three-time world champion Mick Fanning (AUS) will face wildcard Dane Reynolds (USA) in the opening heat of round two when men's Quiksilver Pro resumes, while 11-time world champion Kelly Slater (USA) will take on trials winner Jack Freestone (AUS).

Six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) faces Silvana Lima (BRA) and Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in round three of the women's Roxy Pro.
