Wright keen to handle Suns' tall AFL order

Peter Wright is determined to step out of the shadows at Metricon Stadium as teammate Tom Lynch's AFL future on the Gold Coast remains up in the air.

With Tom Lynch out of the picture this AFL season, and perhaps beyond that, Peter Wright believes it's on him to fill the void on the Gold Coast.

The tall forward, who went eighth in the 2014 draft, has played 47 games at the club and will be the Suns' focal point in attack against Carlton this weekend.

It's a role he may have to get used to with co-captain and fellow key forward Tom Lynch out injured for the remainder of 2018 and strongly linked with a move to a Melbourne club.

But Wright, 21, is comfortable with that.

"I definitely want to take that next step," he told AAP.

"I've played close to 50 games now and am at that point where I want to take a big step forward.

"Especially with how young we are at the moment, it's my duty to take control of that forward line for the rest of the year and be a strong leader."

Wright said last Saturday's breakthrough defeat of Sydney "felt a little bit like a final".

But that only means a good result against Carlton - a team with just one win this season - is now even more necessary.

"There was a lot of weight off a lot of people's shoulders and it was a long time coming," he said of the monumental SCG upset.

"We've been working away with good quarters and good halves here and there but have now shown we can match it for four quarters.

"If we do go out and lose it'd put a sour taste in our mouth after the weekend just gone."
