Wright not gunning for world titles

Rising surfing star Tyler Wright says she's not thinking about a breakthrough world title in 2014, despite a stellar season in last year's championship.

Pressure? What pressure? As far as Tyler Wright is concerned surfing is all about fun, not titles.

The 19-year-old goes into this year's world surfing championship on the back of a stellar 2013 campaign where she won two events and narrowly missed out to Hawaii's Carissa Moore for the title.

As she returns to defend the Roxy Pro title she won last year on the Gold Coast, you could be forgiven for thinking Wright is planning on going one better in 2014.

But as far as she's concerned, worrying about the bigger picture only leads to a lack of focus on the more immediate tasks.

"I had an epic year, I had so much fun," Wright said of her 2013 exploits.

"It's all about the surfing to me. I can go out in a heat and surf the best that I can, I'm going to walk out with a smile on my face. That's it for me.

"I do love competing but it just works better for me if I don't focus on a result. The end. I'd rather enjoy the journey that I'm on."

Wright says she's been "practically" living on the Gold Coast in the build-up to the Roxy Pro, set to start at Snapper Rocks this weekend.

It's a preparation she hopes can help her replicate the form which delivered her the event win last year.

"I love coming here, I kind of live here now so it's kind of the usual," she said.

"It's going to be an exciting year for the whole world tour so it's definitely exciting to me."
