Tyler Wright has kept the pressure on Australian compatriot and world surfing championship leader Sally Fitzgibbons at the Cascais Women's Pro in Portugal.

Petersen on Saturday booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the tour's penultimate event with a 15.40 to 13.10 win over France's Pauline Ado in small one metre swells.

She joins fellow Australians Fitzgibbons and five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in the round of eight.

Wright went into the event trailing Fitzgibbons by 1700 points on the championship standings, closely trailed by Gilmore and Carissa Moore - who is also through to the quarters at Cascais.

In the only other round four heat completed on Saturday, the USA's Lakey Peterson knocked out Australian Nikki Van Dijk.

Wright will meet Johanne Defay in the quarters, Moore will face fellow Hawaiian Malia Manuel, Fitzgibbons and Gilmore will come up against Americans Courtney Conlogue and Peterson respectively.
