Write Cook off at your peril: Botham

Ian Botham has almost dared Australia to write Alastair Cook off after the veteran England opener's double failure in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

Write Alastair Cook off at your own peril.

That was the warning from Ian Botham after ex-England captain Cook's rotten run continued at the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

England arrived in Australia with question marks over their inexperienced top order.

But it is veteran opener Cook who is the biggest concern after being caught hooking Josh Hazlewood for just seven in England's second innings.

Unheralded top order batsmen Mark Stoneman, James Vince and Dawid Malan - boasting a total of 15 Tests' experience - were supposed to be England's weak link this series.

However all three registered half centuries in England's first innings.

In contrast, 32-year-old Cook's first Ashes Test grand total is nine runs.

Alarm bells may be ringing for England's highest Test run-scorer but Botham almost dared Australia to dismiss Cook as a threat before this week's second Test in Adelaide.

"I am not worried about him. How can I be? He is one of our best players," Botham told Fox Sports.

"And he's only in his early 30s, it's not like he is 45.

"Don't write him off - you do so at your own peril."

Cook now has one half-century in six innings on the Ashes tour.

Dig a bit deeper and it makes for even uglier reading for the veteran.

He has three centuries in his last 54 Test innings.

And just six tons in 105 innings - although it does include 243 against West Indies in August.

Cook has 1,297 Test runs at 46.32 in Australia, largely thanks to his stellar 2010-11 series where he amassed a staggering 766 at 127.66.

Botham believed it was a matter of time before Cook again revelled on Australian soil.

"He hasn't forgotten how to play in the last couple of weeks - believe me he will get runs this series," he said.

"And he was bit unlucky (getting caught hooking) yesterday, a yard either way and it was a boundary."

England quick Stuart Broad wasn't concerned by yet another cheap Cook dismissal.

"Not at all. We know what he can do in Australia," he said.

"The stresses of the captaincy are completely away from him.

"His time will come on this tour."
