Descendants of those who fought in the Gallipoli campaign are being invited to take part in a special event to mark centenary commemorations in London on Anzac Day.

Thousands of Australians and New Zealanders are expected to take part in the UK-led ceremony, to be held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall on April 25.

UK Culture Secretary Sajid Javid made the announcement when he met with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at London's Imperial War Museum on Monday.

Relatives from all nations can apply for free tickets to watch the ceremony from a reserved area or join a march past the Cenotaph.

While Mr Key said there were no immediate plans to provide financial assistance for those hoping to attend, the event would provide an alternative for those unable to secure tickets to commemorations in Gallipoli.

"I think it's a great opportunity to be able to reflect on what took place and a reflection of the reality that only so many people can be accommodated (in Gallipoli)," Mr Key told reporters.

"There's been a ferocious ballot process and New Zealand would have liked to have had a lot more numbers being able to attend.

"But this gives us an opportunity to make sure they can take part in the commemorations even if they can't be on the Gallipoli peninsula."

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott encouraged Australians living in London to take part in what would form part of "the most significant commemoration in a generation."

Mr Javid said all members of the public were welcome to attend but priority would be given to relatives.

Those wishing to apply for tickets can do at the www.gov.uk website.
